Course Overview

Frontline service workers are in positions which support and interact with students, other employees, guests, parents, visitors, volunteers, and other users of our campuses.

The Responding to Racism and Discrimination in Frontline Interactions training is focused on equipping frontline employees at Algonquin College with response plan options when racism and discrimination occur in their work environment. Participants will learn about the factors that contribute to discriminatory interactions, its impacts, and the elements of an effective response plan, from de-escalation to self-care.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand and interpret contributing factors to discriminatory interactions in frontline service settings.
  • Understand the impacts of racism and discrimination and create a personal self-care plan following discriminatory events.
  • Identify the elements of an effective response plan to navigate racism and discrimination as it occurs in frontline interactions.
  • Determine and practice implementing appropriate measures to address discriminatory encounters through application of response plan elements.
