Skills Mapping for Career Development
Synopsis
Wednesday, August 12th, 1:30pm-3:00pmCourse Overview
The Skills Mapping for Career Development workshop;is a 90‑minute hybrid session designed to help participants take a clear, practical approach to career development by focusing on skills rather than job titles. Through guided reflection and discussion, participants identify their current technical, transferable, and soft skills; clarify career goals based on interests, values, and role preferences; and explore roles that align with their strengths. Pre‑work includes a skills inventory worksheet, which sets the foundation for in‑session activities such as mapping existing skills, identifying “must‑haves” and deal‑breakers, and understanding recurring skill requirements across roles of interest.
The workshop emphasizes moving from insight to action. Participants analyze skills gaps between their current capabilities and desired roles, then build a personalized development plan using SMART goals. The session highlights multiple pathways for closing skills gaps, including training, stretch assignments, volunteering, and informational interviews. It also prepares participants to take next steps by aligning their résumé with targeted skills, leveraging professional networks, and having informed development conversations with their people leader. By the end of the workshop, participants leave with clear career direction, 2–3 concrete action steps, and momentum to continue building skills intentionally.
